Easter KC – 4/3/2015

We went to Kansas City for Easter. This weekend would be a treat for everybody but Danelle… We celebrated mom’s birthday and helped her blow out her candles on her cake.IMG_20150403_232429

During this whole time, Herman and his friends were frantically working on putting his Mustang back together. He got a new engine and has been re-assembling to make it road worthy.

They worked later into the night than they should have and one neighbor came by to let them know. But the results sounded amazing!

I made a special trip to Ryan Slebos’ house to pick up Jo’s and my boat after he finished re-working them. His work was perfect and we were both quite satisfied with the result!

The kids got to go on a wild Easter Egg hunt in the backyard!

Another perfect weekend!

Christmas in KC – 12/26/2014

Christmas fell on Thursday and I still had to work on Friday. So after a short day at the office, we left in the early afternoon for Kansas City to celebrate with my family. As always, the pool table in my parents basement is a big hit.

Of course, coming to KC also had some side benefits! Danelle and I made a special trip to Byron and Christy’s house to see their new baby, Morgan. She is super cute, I can never get enough baby time!

Later in the weekend, we celebrated the perfect weather by having family unicycle practice in front of my parents house. Herman can sort of ride and has his own unicycle. I brought my 3 so there were four to practice with.

We laughed about this practice for a while, but its a hard skill to master! Eventually, we ended up at the bowling alley where my family’s real sports talent lies. In fact, I’m probably one of the lower skilled of the family.

My lack of bowling skill is made up for by my willingness to hand out money for games and beer 🙂

Unfortunately, our time comes to an end too quickly. Its time for us to head back to St. Louis. On the way, we were able to find a Fazoli’s restaurant for dinner which made Sonora quite happy.

Family Campout – 9/20/2014

Like many families, we don’t seem to get together often enough. In an attempt to remedy that, we planned an extended family campout. The plan was to meet at Pomme de Terre State Park on Friday night and hang out till Sunday. Of course even with a family campsite, plans get in the way. Danelle had something going on and couldn’t make the campout, and Sonora choose to go to a Girl Scout campout with her friends. So instead, it was just Corvin and I for this trip.

I left work early (about 2:30) and went home. There I hooked up the camper and finished loading supplies. Then I went to pick up Corvin from school and head out to our adventure. I was slightly worried how the weekend would go because Corvin had just gotten braces the day before and would  have issues eating things as his teeth would be sore. I kept him full of ibuprofen per the doctor’s orders. It took a few tries to find something that he wanted to eat on the drive down.

Just past Rolla, MO, we turned off the major highway and started the windy 2 lane highway that would lead us to the campsite. I learned quickly that the new short antenna I put on my van only picks up radio signals if you’re in town. So the choices of things to listen to were limited to regional high school football game, and even that came in and out as we traversed the hills.

I thought we might be the first people to the campsite as we left early from home. I was right. We pulled into the park and the site and the corresponding ones were empty. It was just dusk when we pulled up, but that was fine with me. Well, except for the fact that the sites didn’t look like the map that I looked at online. This isn’t terribly uncommon, but it just didn’t feel right.

I had talked to Hiatt earlier on the drive and I expected him to show up and he hadn’t made it when I expected him. So I disconnected the camper and drove around every loop in the campsite. He was nowhere to be seen and it was getting dark. I decided to park the van and walk to the entrance to meet him. Of course, he didn’t show up there either. Ohh, and there was no cell reception anywhere near the lake or leading up to it on our drive.

At this point, I was frustrated and concerned, so I walked over to the site of the camp hosts and knocked on their door. They were quite nice and explained that there was another campsite on the other side of the lake. We were provided directions that required an additional stop at a gas station for additional help!

Once we got to the campsite, it was already dark. It isn’t fun to set up in the dark, but I managed decently. After I got set up, I realized that i wasn’t the only one in the family that had issues finding the campsite.

We ended making a few stops to the convenience store and this happened.

Of course, I have a thing for water, so I ended up renting a boat for all the “kids” to hang out on!

It was a great weekend to camp with family and I can’t wait to do it again!

Hayden and Jennifer 10 Years – 7/12/2014

We were on the road by 6 am, which was a feat with the people involved. Even getting our two kids to wake up on time was simple compared with my brothers, Herman and Henry. Much to my surprise, everybody got up with minimal fuss and we were on the road. 3/4 of my passengers returned to their slumber once they were belted into place. I drove on with small talk to Danelle.

As we got close to Fort Campbell, Kentucky we got calls wondering where we were and if we would make it on time. Of course we didn’t dress up for the drive as it was quite early. So we stopped at one of my favorite roadside stops, Flying J Travel Pizza Plaza. In the parking lot, a few of us changed. Others went inside to the bathroom to change. Once changed, we met Hayden and family just outside the fort. There, we did some car switching to have a military person in each vehicle. That makes it easier to get inside.

We drove all across the base until we got to the lodge where the anniversary party was being held. There, the families started to mingle and have a good time. IMG_7149

We had a nice lunch and Hayden and Jennifer played a movie of their wedding anniversary ceremony in Hawaii. They also wore their wedding outfits for the part. Here are photos of the men and ladies.

And of course, the two most important people, Hayden and Jennifer!

After the party wrapped up, we went back to their house for more festivities deep into the night. This is the perfect way to celebrate a wedding!

Balls, Bats, and Slurpees – 7/11/2014

Its Friday and tomorrow, 7/12, my brother Hayden is celebrating his 10th wedding anniversary. He’s living in Kentucky and St. Louis happens to be on the way. In addition, Corvin and Sonora were still at Grandma’s house visiting. Since there wouldn’t be enough room in the car for all of them, my kids plus Herman and Henry came via train back to St. Louis. We had a day to kill and decided to have some fun together.

First up was a visit to the batting cages. IMG_20140711_144354 IMG_20140711_155819

None of us are athletes and many pitches were missed. Watching each other mess  up is always funny! Of  course when 6 people are swinging bats, the tokens for playing are consumed faster than they can be minted.

With sore hands we needed something to help us out. Being that the data was 7/11, it matched the chain 7-eleven. More importantly, they had a free Slurpee special since the date matched their company name. We found a suitable location and acquired our free beverage.

Of course, that would not end our outing. I decided to take our group mini golfing. I have driven past Arizona Action Park several times and wanted to go in. Today was the day. IMG_20140711_171602 IMG_20140711_173448

What makes this mini golf so interesting is the work put into the sculptures around it. The whole group enjoyed it… There may have been some cheating to block the hole from others…
