One of the goals of our new house and the land around it was to have a fruit tree orchard. We decided to dedicate a portion of the inheritance from my mom to make this happen. We have wanted to plant trees, but without water, it wasn’t feasible. Today this changes. The first 8 trees have arrived. I’ll get into more detail in a future post about the types of trees and what we plan to do with them. For today, its enough to know that we ordered dwarf bare root trees from Stark Brothers. I was honestly quite concerned when they arrived. All of our precious trees in a small box. I do have trust in Danelle and she said it would be fine. Step one was to get the eight trees out to the property and plant them before they died. Sonora was also with us.
The image above is one of the trees. Its a bare root meaning it ships without any soil. That is one of the reasons its very important to get them into the ground quickly. Danelle carefully worked the roots apart and put them into the hole on top of a bed of manure to get them a proper jump start. We were quite careful to get the soil all around the roots. It took a few hours, but eventually all the trees were in.
Due to the overwhelming presence of deer, we’re inside the electric fence area to protect the trees. Now the trees are in the ground, bare root and leaves. I just need to trust the process. We’ll be back every other day to give each tree a few gallons of water!
On the house side of things, we were putting in insulation that was beyond the scope of what the builder was going to do. I knew it was simple work that I have done before and would be significantly cheaper to do myself.
Batted insulation comes in the same width as a framed house. You use a hammer stapler to attach it to the studs and you’re ready to go. Its a bit time consuming and as you work, the room gets darker as the wall of insulation is built. It also gets warmer as the air isn’t flowing through the studs and its well, insulated.
Lets keep this progress going!!!
