Pouring The Basement Floor – 8/5/2024

Today we are pouring the basement floor of our house. There is lots of prep work to do. Plastic is being laid out which seems strange, but I find myself saying “trust the process” more often.

Lots of equipment and workers are here for the pour. I guess we’re ready to go. It is a long reach to get the concrete where it is needed. The first truck is a concrete conveyor. It holds a smaller load of concrete but provides the means to spread it much beyond the back of the truck. Conveyors can reach as far as 40 feet. When it is empty, other trucks will come and empty directly onto the conveyor to spread concrete where it is needed. It requires two operators that are well in sync to ensure the concrete is released where its needed at appropriate quantities.

Generally contractors don’t like to pour basements at this stage of construction. They have more flexibility with mistakes for sewer lines. Once the basement is poured, it is significantly more expensive to correct mistakes or make owner requested changes. However, our design has a few load bearing walls. That means we need the basement poured before framing can commence.  Here comes the concrete across the hole.

Its hard work being the guy with the controls for the conveyor truck. Actually, it was very hot outside, so I don’t blame him.

Its starting to come together!

On larger projects, it just makes sense to work it with a machine. Time to load it on the floor once the concrete has hardened enough to walk on.

I left them here to finish as I needed to get back to work.

Before I forget, we received another notice from the city for a violation. It seems my lovely neighbors don’t like the port a potty near the street. We called construction company and they called the vendor who said they would move it. When the vendor moved the port a potty, they just moved it next to the driveway. This kept it in violation and was still an issue. Calls were made trying to keep us happy with the city and the silly neighbors. We were lucky that the concrete company offered to move it. They took their bobcat and moved it up next to the house. We’ve now had two violations and corrections. I’m doing my best to stay on the good side of the city as we progress!
