Tour de Donut bicycle race is a spoof on the “Tour de France.” The race itself is 34 miles long with time bonuses for donuts eaten at the two donut stops. This year, Corvin and Jackson would be racing his tandem bicycle. I would unicycle the shorter “donut hole” which is just over 12 miles and one donut stop. We have done this race a few times in the past and it always seems to threaten rain when we participate. This year was more than just a threat. It was pouring on the drive up! Normally we see a few cars with bicycles on the highway and this year we saw none. Just the same, we went to the event and figured we would just get wet.
The parking area, mostly grass, was soaked. This meant our shoes would be soaked before the event. We got registered and retreated to the tailgate to attempt to stay dry.
As usual, I started in the back. At the start, people get bunched up and start/stop for the first quarter mile. This requires me to dismount and re-mount which takes time and space. I find it better to just start in back so I can go non-stop. Corvin and Jackson went in the middle as they were riding the whole course and wanted to get a good finish time.
I finished first as my route was about 1/3 the distance they were traveling. I waited and got photos of the boys going past the finish line!
They finished 2nd in tandem racers via their unadjusted time. But the story doesn’t end there. Jackson ate a ton of donuts during the ride. Their adjusted time gave them 1st place in tandem. Additionally, their adjusted time gave them 2nd overall 🙂 It may have something to do with the two of them eating 20 donuts combined between both of them and the two stops. Here are the champions with their two finishing medals.
We’ll have to do this again next year!
