Gutter Help – 8/1/2024

I heard a strange noise inside my house. Its always best to investigate the noise in my experience. If something bad is happening, you can prevent worse damage. The noise was from the kitchen. Lucky for me, it wasn’t water related. What I found was not in the kitchen, but outside. It seems that my gutter cover finally had enough and mostly fell off my house.

Of course, this is the highest roof on my house, so off to the home improvement store to rent a 32′ extension ladder to reach up to the top. Back home, I put the ladder against the house and climbed with tools. I often find the first few times up a ladder are the worst as you are getting used to it. I took a photo at the top and I think I look scared, but still took a photo.

With some effort, I was able to remove the metal gutter cover that was hanging on by a few screws. Since I was up there, I wanted to remove the supports that were no longer needed. This took some practice and then cleaning out the gutter while I was up there.

There was just one piece of metal left and I planned to take it off and clean the full gutter. As I approached the end, I got an unwelcome surprise. A wasp nest was under the last section and they were not happy I was interrupting their home. I really didn’t want to get stung that high up the ladder and potentially fall a long way. I had no luck with my wasp spray. Eventually, I came up with a plan… I tied the garden hose to the ladder and raised it back up. Then I turned on the hose and let the water flush them out.

I made lots of half attempts in the process, but did eventually work. That and throwing a ball at the last piece of metal up there until I knocked it down. While I didn’t get the while cleaning job done that I wanted to, I also didn’t get stung. Seems like a win to me.
