Exterior Plus Concerns – 1/13/2026

All of the vigas have been installed on the house. They look great. The carpenter said he was skeptical, but once installed they look fantastic. But on the installation, the 3 vigas over the porch roof don’t have lights. We didn’t think it made sense to light up our roof. When we prepared them for construction, we put holes in all but 3 of them. We labeled the boxes and packed them in the house to be installed. The carpenter didn’t notice the labels and when he got to the final 3, realized they were labeled. He had to swap the porch ones. We both had a laugh about it as it was not a significant issue. Just men not reading instructions before starting anything!

My plumber talked to me about some concerning things as he worked on the rough in. He noticed that several of the trusses didn’t touch the top plate in the framing.

This gap can cause huge issues with drywall cracking in the future. He asked about how it passed the framing inspection. I gave him the look of someone ignorant in the art of construction. It seems that the builder should have ordered a framing inspection before any trades people started their work. At this point, I have HVAC and Plumbing work started in the house. The builder was on vacation this week and I didn’t want to bother him, so I called and ordered a framing inspection for the house. It’ll be about a week and a half and the plumber isn’t coming back until after it is complete.

Ohh, one last happy note. We’re adding a litter box room for our cats in the basement. Its a custom house and we thought, why not. The builder said it would be a non issue to add it as its just a little framing and some additional dry wall. The carpenter had finished the initial cat room framing. This will keep the cats out of the unfinished area of the house, but still allow us access to the room to keep it clean.

This first image is the framed area is the actual cat door. Danelle noticed its a bit too low as the bottom is even with the bottom of the step. We asked them to make the top 2 inches taller. This will allow the cats access without belly crawling in the room.

Below is the ramp for them to walk the rest of the way down to the floor of the room. We think its too steep, but can easily add something to give them traction to go up and down.

That’s all for this update!
