My brother Henry invited me to play in a doubles disc golf tournament. Henry doesn’t play a ton, but does enjoy it. It helps that his boss at work was part of the team putting on the tournament. I happily agreed to come play a round with him. All I had to do was come to Kansas City.
As a bonus, it was my dad’s birthday that weekend as well. I came into KC on Friday night and Henry met me at dad’s house around 6am .We carpooled the 45 minute drive to Clauder’s Bogey Barn, a private course in Payola Kansas for the tournament. We registered together with the team name “Unfairway brothers”. The format of the tournament was a 2 round special. The first round was a 2 person best shot. We didn’t play horrible, but were still several shots above par. We had the BBQ lunch and sat around talking to Henry’s work friends. The second round was significantly harder.
I’ve not played much, so playing a second 18 holes in a single day showed significant decline to our throw. Add that to the fact that the second round was an every other shot. This meant that each player on a team needed to be on their best to have a great score. To say I stopped caring after a while was an understatement. They also had lots of alcohol on the course and we each had a few drinks.
Did I mention that the course was awesome? There were two island shots. One with low risk
And and the other high risk. It was a long drive before you got to the lake.
There was also a momma goose protecting her eggs on the island.
Henry needed to use the custom rake to get a disc out of the lake.
And of course the namesake of the course, the bogey barn. This is a long drive to a basket inside the barn.
And just as important is seeing dad later in the day for his birthday!
I’m glad I came to town to play the tournament with Henry. I need more practice before I do this again. No, I don’t expect to win, but I would like to not do so poorly on my second round!
